This year, Manchester University honoured Dr Newton's services to sport by awarding him a place on the "University of Manchester Sports Hall of Fame". Frank was invited to their Sports Awards dinner in May to celebrate his induction to the honours board.
Dr Frank Newton OBE attended Adams from 1942 until 1948 and was in Adams' House, living as a boarder during WW2 and rationing. He came from a family of Adams’ pupils, saying, “My father was at AGS in the days of Mr Shuker, my brother followed me (Graham died) and my cousin (Geoffrey) also - he is still alive and lives in Edinburgh. At one time we Newtons were 1% of the school population.”
He became passionate about running, with the encouragement and coaching of ‘Jobey’ Mr A.W.C Johnson. After a stint doing military service in Hong Kong, he then studied Medicine at Manchester University. During this time, he continued running to a very high standard and began competing in sailing – becoming World Championship Yacht Helmsman in the Finn Class. His lifelong passion for sport continued to shape his career.
Frank was a GP for over 25 years before retiring and throwing himself into volunteering and working in sports medicine, gaining a master’s degree in Sports Medicine at Nottingham University in 1994. He put this qualification to great use, spending 40 years looking after the British Racing Drivers Club at Silverstone and setting up a Sports Injury Clinic for the NHS in Northampton General Hospital for 22 years. He also continued sailing, becoming an international sailing official and medical advisor.
It was his services to sailing that earned Frank an OBE in the New Year’s Honours of 2012. The recognition by the University of Manchester on to the Sports Hall of Fame is well deserved. He is also, incidentally, on the wall of the Lynn James Pavilion too!
