A visit from ON Ray Bromley

Ray, a professor in Human Geography, spoke to our Year 10s on his visit to school.

ON Ray Bromley (Class of 1965) recently visited Adams as part of a nostalgia tour of the UK which also included a visit to his Alma Mater, Cambridge University.

During Mr. Bromley’s time here in Clive House, he excelled in chess, playing to a county level. He was also on the hockey team, a Sergeant in the CCF, and enjoyed swimming. He remembers fondly his first trip abroad to France, which ignited a passion for travel.

Ray left Adams in 1965 with A levels in Geography, Biology and Chemistry, although stayed on whilst waiting for his Oxbridge pre-admission exam. During this time, he earnt as much money as he could at the Victoria Hotel and Audco so that he could embark on an adventure through the Americas, travelling on buses and living with local families through Canada, the US and Mexico. It was the latter where he learnt to speak Spanish fluently which enabled him to work all over the world.

After his travels, Ray studied Geography at Churchill College, Cambridge University and was part of the Explorers and Travellers’ Club. His specialism has been Urban Studies, Planning and Regional Development and is now Professor Emeritus at the University of Albany, New York.

During Ray’s visit, he toured the school, visited the inside of Longford for the first time and met the Mr. Hickey. He then delivered a talk about Street life and Urban Sprawl in India to some of our Year 10 Geography students with plenty of photos, which was well-received and inspired some great questions.
