Stuart's Memories of Lynn James

Our thanks to ON Stuart Everall for recently reaching out to share his delight at the naming of the new sports pavilion.

Stuart Everall, Class of 1975, says his PE teacher Lynn James had a massive influence on him - so much so that he went on to have a career as a PE teacher. He has shared the following words with us:

"Lynn James was my PE/games teacher throughout my time at Adams. I was already a “sports-mad” boy so it was no surprise that I enjoyed his lessons. Enjoyment though was far from my mind in one of my first lessons when we were taken to the outdoor, un-heated pool for a swimming lesson!

"Small in stature, Jesse, as most pupils referred to him as, was large in passion, energy and enthusiasm for most, if not all sports. Being a Welshman it was perhaps no surprise that he had a passion for rugby, where his coaching was contemporary and he certainly had a positive impact on my school playing career. Donning an old jumper and a pair of wellies there were no “airs or graces” about Lynn James and he produced a great standard from his teams. But he enjoyed other sports as well and I can still remember vividly his demonstration of the forward defensive shot in cricket.

"He celebrated his numerous successes with reserved cheeriness and he accepted defeat magnanimously. Lynn James was my form master in my several years and he was a kind and compassionate man for all those he cared for. Ultimately my decision to become a PE teacher was influenced by my time with Lynn James.

"Having started my games’ lessons at Wellington road for rugby and Shuker fields for cricket I was one of many pupils to benefit from what was at the time the new pavilion at Longford. It is quite fitting that this new building should carry the name of Lynn James, someone who was lost all too early but who was a true stalwart of Adams."
