Careers advice given a boost by ONs

Our apprentices at the Q&A panel

Our dedicated Careers Adviser, Sonya Wilson, is passionate about helping our students navigate their future paths. She works hard to provide the best advice possible, interviewing every student in years 10 and 12. While Sonya can’t be an expert in every career field, that’s where our fantastic ONs come in! This year we have been lucky enough to have so many of our alumni give up their free time to help out. Thanks to them all - you can see brief updates in the captioned media gallery attached.

Throughout the year, we have events where we invite ONs to come and speak to out students to share their experiences and wisdom.

October: The first careers event of the year is mock interviews for early applicants to Oxford and Cambridge in Medecine, Vetinary and Dentistry.  These can be done over Zoom or in person.

March: Our Careers Fair is always a busy event where representatives from organisations such as the Armed Forces, NHS, and a variety of corporate organisations set up their stalls for older year groups. Next year's event has already been scheduled in the Sports Hall on the 25th of March.

June: Progression week for the Lower Sixth hosts a variety of speakers on all sorts of topics. The students can choose which is most relevant to them. This year, ONs  come in and talk about working in Finance, becoming an entrepeneur and John Millswriting a CV.

July: This week has been Activities Week, which is the busiest week for careers advice as we invite people to take part in either Speed Networking, where guests face rapid-fire questions from enthusiastic year 9s about career paths, or the ON Forum, which focuses on recent leavers' experiences of life after Sixth Form.

Looking ahead, Sonya aims to introduce practice sessions for Apprenticeship Assessment Centres. With the growing popularity of this pathway, it’s a competitive field, and our students will benefit from honing their skills. The Haberdashers are also hoping to grow mentoring on a company level with their new "Aspire" program. More details on this will be released later.
